Navigating towards Healthy ageing – The Ayurveda way

Adding years to life is Ageing, whereas adding life to years is healthy ageing.

India is presently the country with the highest population of youth globally. Although this is an encouraging aspect presently, it will also lead to a major burden on healthcare infrastructure by 2050 when there will be a sharp increase of elderly population in the country projected to around 315 million or 20% of the total population.

Ageing is the time-related deterioration of the physiological functions of the human body. Although inevitable, it is not well accepted in the public strata as it affects one’s physical, mental, social and emotional self. Various illnesses bombard the body, both physical and sensory deterioration, increasing dependency for day-to-day activities, much to their displeasure. Psychological disturbances such as memory deterioration, declined cognitive functions add up to their discontentment. Health issues along with a feeling of emptiness lead them to social and emotional disconnect pushing them further into the abyss. Various factors such as environmental factors, lifestyle practices, psychological factors such as stress, cultural and occupational factors disturb the normal functioning of the systems within the body, thereby leading to an accelerated ageing process.

Ayurveda has a primary branch of therapeutics known as Jara chikitsa which deals with management of geriatric illnesses. The word jara is defined as “jarā vayaḥkṛtaślathamāṃsādyavasthābhedaḥ” which means age related degeneration of mamsa and other dhatus. Geriatric population clinically present with a number of degenerative conditions. Some of the most common ones are neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia, muscular degeneration such as sarcopenia, Arthritis due to osteo-degeneration, degenerative disc disease affecting the spine etc. The way to address all these is to provide proper support and improved healthcare so as to promote healthier ageing. Ayurveda emphasizes that healthy aging is achievable through holistic self-care, lifestyle management, and specific therapies. These constitute the concept of Healthy ageing. The World Health Organization has been focusing on fostering healthy ageing and has declared 2021-30 as Decade of healthy ageing. Daily and Seasonal Routines

Ayurveda recommends structured daily (dinacharya), nightly (ratricharya), and seasonal (ritucharya) routines to synchronize the body’s biological clock with nature. These routines include optimal times for waking, sleeping, self and social hygiene, yoga, pranayama, and medicated oil massage, which help maintain circadian rhythms and overall health.

Diet and Nutrition

Food is that which feeds and sustains individuality. A wholesome, balanced diet is central to healthy aging. Ayurveda advocates for easily digestible, sattvik foods such as grains, beans, seasonal and local vegetables, and fruits. Special attention is given to nourishing the body’s tissues and preventing nutritional deficiencies, which can accelerate aging. Foods should be adapted to the individual’s constitution and age, with an emphasis on their nutritional content and potential to support various bodily functions. A proper individualized diet counselling would go a long way in promoting healthy ageing.

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Ayurveda recognizes that aging begins in the mind before manifesting physically. Practices such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness are recommended to promote mental clarity, emotional stability, and a positive outlook, all of which contribute to graceful aging.

Lifestyle and Ethical Conduct

Behavioural and ethical guidelines, including healthy sleep, moderation in sexual activity, and virtuous conduct, are emphasized for maintaining vitality and preventing premature aging. Healthy aging relies on mindful lifestyle choices and ethical conduct. A balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management promote physical and mental well-being. Preventive healthcare and social engagement enhance longevity, while kindness, gratitude, and sustainable living foster a fulfilling life. By prioritizing wellness and integrity, individuals can age gracefully and maintain overall vitality.

Rasayana refers to rejuvenation therapies, dietary guidelines, lifestyle practices, and periodic detoxification (Panchakarma). These therapies aim to enhance immunity, sustain youthfulness, improve cognitive function, and delay degenerative changes. Traditionally, Rasayana has been classified for its anti-aging, disease-preventive, and curative benefits (rasayanam cha tat jneyam yajjaraavyadhi vinashanam). However, Rasayana extends beyond these aspects, integrating pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to disease prevention and overall well-being. Its core objective is to ensure an optimally healthy and productive life.

As birth rates decline and life expectancy rises, society must address the challenges of longevity. The global burden of disease is shifting from infectious illnesses to noncommunicable conditions, with leading causes of mortality among the elderly including respiratory issues, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. All this underscores the need for holistic and preventive health solutions, highlighting Rasayana therapy as a promising approach to enhancing immunity and mitigating disease risks.

The goal is to enhance vitality and well-being rather than merely managing symptoms. Ayurveda emphasizes prevention through a balanced diet, stress management, and personalized care based on individual constitution. By integrating disciplined routines, proper nutrition, rejuvenating therapies, and mind-body practices, Ayurveda helps in managing age-related decline while promoting longevity. Healthy aging requires individuals to adopt holistic principles, cultivate harmonious lifestyle practices, and make conscious choices that support physical and mental well-being, ensuring a smooth and fulfilling transition through life’s later years.
